Sault Ste (Saint) Marie, with an approximate population of 74,566, carries the nickname "The Soo" and the motto "Naturally Gifted". It is the third largest city in northern Ontario and is located on the St. Mary's River in the Algoma District. The name comes from the Old French Phrase "Saults de Sainte-Marie," which means "Saint Mary's Falls".

Originally, the area was known as Baawitigong which is an Ojibwa name meaning "place of the rapids". When Etienne Brule came here in 1623, the place was called "Sault de Gaston" after Gaston, Duke of Orleans who was the brother of King Louis XIII of France. French Jesuit missionaries renamed the town to its present name and also settled Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan in the U.S. and across the river from the Canadian city.
