For many years the area was scarred by a lack of vegetation due to logging for wood during the reconstruction of Chicago after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Also, sulphur rain continually destroyed the vegetation of the region and was caused by the smelting of nickel-copper.

During the 1960's, NASA trained astronauts in Sudbury because of unique rock formations that were similar to what they felt they would find on the moon. Unfortunately a misconception resulted and people felt that the astronauts were training in Sudbury because it resembled the lifeless look of the Moon. This affected the image of the city for years. This has all changed now though. During the 1970s the city began a massive "regreening" effort and in 1992, the United Nations gave Sudbury the "Local Government Honours Award" in honour of its efforts in the area of environmental rehabilitation.
