Thunder Bay car insurance information

Thunder Bay, with an estimated population of 109,016, happens to be the second largest city in Ontario and is situated on the north shore of Lake Superior in the northwestern corner of the province. The city actually took on its current name after the amalgamation of the towns of Fort William and Port Aurthur in 1970.

Thunder Bay began with the introduction of two French fur trading posts in 1679 and 1717 which were both abandoned and then the area was settled again in 1803. Around 1905 the city grew rapidly due to the introduction of the CPR and a western wheat boom. The city became a port for the wheat which was being shipped to Europe. The city also has had a long a prosperous lumber industry.

Today Thunder Bay has as its main employers the following companies: Bombardier Transportation, Bowater Forest Products, Abitibi Consolidated, Buchanan Forest Products, and Cascades Inc. The public sector also employs many people in the city. Unfortunately both the forest products and transportation industries have declined in recent years and now the city has the dubious distinction of having the highest jobless rate in Ontario with approximately 8.3 per cent of the people out of work.

Thunder Bay as a city has a smaller population than many other Canadian cities and as such there are relatively fewer cars and fewer accidents than one would find in more populated areas. This may mean that Thunder Bay residents might pay relatively less for their car insurance than people might pay when living in more populated centres.
